On the eve of the premiere of Alien: Covenant, the newest addition to the Alien series, AltspaceVR hosted an Alien event of their own.

With the recent launch of 360 Theater, allowing people to watch 360 videos and share the experience together in AltspaceVR, came a perfect platform to showcase Alien: Covenant In Utero. And what’s better than simply showing the VR video to an audience? Inviting David Karlak, the VR Director, and Hussain Currimbhoy, a programmer with The Sundance Film Festival, to join in a live Q&A. Hussain came dressed as himself and David donned a custom Xenomorph avatar.

As other avatars began to trickle into the event, they soon realized there was a surprise waiting—yellow spacesuits, facehuggers, and chestbursters for everyone to wear. It wasn’t long before the space looked just like a scene from one of the movies.

As the virtual Q&A began, David described the experience of being a VR director on the film, which is a portrayal through the lens of a Neomorph.

“For me, an important element was empowering the user and making them feel like they’re perceiving the world in a different way.”

Further, he touched on the future of VR cinema in general. While he doesn’t believe VR will ever replace the traditional movie format, he maintains that the future of VR is full of potential to provide a more immersive experience.

“In my mind, the future of VR storytelling is an experience where people get to be the characters.”

p id=”b487″ class=”graf graf–p graf-after–pullquote”>Immediately following the event there was an “Alien after-party”, where avatars could put on their alien of choice and dance around with glow sticks. They partied until the event came to a close–or as they say in Alien–‘game over, man.’
