If you are a child of the 90s, chances are Bill Nye played a large part in your elementary school sciences classes. It was always a treat when you got the opportunity to learn about energy or gravity from everyone’s favorite ‘science guy’. So it came as no surprise when Bill Nye was about to enter his event in AltspaceVR and chants of “Bill! Bill! Bill! Bill!” could be heard throughout the audience.
In this very special installment of NBC’s MACH in VR series, Editorial Director David Freeman invited Bill Nye to come on the show to discuss his new book, Everything All at Once, and talk about his “8 Principles of Everything” that will help you unleash your inner nerd and tap into “radical curiosity to solve any problem”.
The event was jam-packed as avatars donned different colors of virtual bow-ties (a new interactable object introduced for this event) and scrambled to get a good view of the show. As Bill went through his 8 Principles, the set dynamically changed to coincide with themes and place the audience into contextual environments.
After watching Bill Nye in virtual reality with avatars from all over the world, it was hard not to feel a unique sense of nostalgia and a realization of how far technology has progressed since watching his Disney Channel show two decades ago. As Bill left the stage, one fan yelled what many of the audience members were feeling: “I love Bill Nye and I love the 90s!”
If you weren’t able to catch the live performance, you can watch the YouTube video below or attend the VR Encore on 7/31 from 7–8pm PST.
