Explore Unity’s Polybrush tool for custom 3D asset creation.

When it comes to 3D modeling, there are two schools of approaches. The first approach is to more manually and meticulously edit each vertex of the 3D mesh until you produce the shape you want. However, the second approach comes in the form of sculpting, which as the word implies, reproduces the effect of sculpting something like clay in a digital environment.

Sculpting is a common feature found in popular modeling software like Blender, ZBrush, and so on. However, Unity has come up with its own in-engine solution to this problem: Polybrush.

With Polybrush added to your project, you get access to core features found in most 3D modeling programs that will allow you to sculpt your 3D meshes into a variety of interesting and complex shapes. Not only that, but Unity also offers integrations with engine features that offer you ways to easily incorporate your model with your Unity projects.

This Polybrush tutorial will introduce you to one of those unique features – using Polybrush to “paint” Prefabs. You’ll discover the tools you need to paint onto your meshes, and also learn how to conform your Prefab to whatever shape your mesh takes. Beyond this, you’ll also see how this is practically applied to create a planet with lush vegetation so you can implement it in your own environments.

Regardless of what type of Unity project you’re trying to make, Unity’s Polybrush tool will offer you new and convenient ways to customize your game assets. This allows you to not only create unique-looking models not found elsewhere, but gives you the freedom to express the aesthetics you want without turning to third-party programs.

No art experience is required (though knowledge of the Unity basics is expected), so start mastering Polybrush today!
